What is Nexium® used for?

Nexium is used to treat diseases that are related to acid in the stomach and gullet. These include:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) where acid from the stomach escapes backwards into the gullet causing inflammation of the swallowing pipe (oesophagitis) and heartburn (a burning feeling rising from the stomach or lower chest up towards the neck).

  • Ulcers (see peptic ulcer) in the stomach or upper part of the intestine, associated with infection by the microscopic bug (bacterium) "Helicobacter pylori". This is treated by a combination of Nexium and antibiotics.

How does Nexium® work?
Nexium works by blocking a particular type of molecule, which is manufactured by a type of cells in the stomach wall cells that produce stomach acid. In blocking this system, Nexium reduces the amount of stomach acid produced.

How is Nexium® given?
Nexium is supplied as tablets called MUPS, which are easy to swallow and dissolvable; and in the US as capsules, which should be swallowed whole with liquid. You should not stop taking this medicine except on your doctor's advice.
