How does Inderex® work?

Inderex combines two medicines that have different ways of working (modes of action) and leads to a greater lowering of blood pressure in more people than with either medicine used alone.

  • Propranolol (see Inderal) belongs to a group of medicines called beta-blockers:

    • Propranolol stops certain chemicals from attaching (binding) to sites called beta-receptors in the heart, so they can’t produce their effects.

    • It stops the binding of the chemical called noradrenaline that is released from nerves in the heart, to the beta receptor.

    • It also blocks another chemical called adrenaline, which is a hormone (chemical signal carried in the blood) that has similar effects to noradrenaline.

    • These effects slow the heart rate and reduce the force of its contraction, thereby lowering the blood pressure.

    • Propranolol has effects on many parts of the body, including the heart and circulation.

  • Bendrofluazide is a medicine called a water tablet or diuretic:

    • It works mainly by stopping the re-absorption of sodium (salt) and water from the kidneys back into the blood stream.

    • This results in increased urine output (diuresis) and increased sodium loss in the urine. These effects lower the blood pressure.

How is Inderex® given?
Inderex is supplied as a long acting (controlled release) capsule. Do not crush or break the capsule.

It is very important that you take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you, even if you do not feel ill. This is because heart and blood pressure problems, if not treated, can get progressively worse.

It is also important to follow any lifestyle instructions that your doctor has given to you, like trying to give up smoking, reducing your weight, doing more exercise and eating a healthy diet.
