What is Entocort® ?
The active ingredient of Entocort is called budesonide, which is a locally acting medicine of the steroid type (glucocorticosteroid). It is highly effective as an anti-inflammatory drug and, because it works mainly where it is needed, it does not affect other body systems to any great degree.

What is Entocort® used for?
Entocort is used to treat Crohn's disease including mild-to-moderate active episodes/attacks; and in some countries it is used to maintain and prolong time without attacks. It is also used for ulcerative colitis, and both are caused by inflammation in the large and small bowel (intestine). Entocort is used to bring the symptoms of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis under control. Once this has been achieved, your doctor will generally advise changing to another type of medicine to keep the symptoms under control. It is important to follow the doctor’s instructions carefully on how and when to stop Entocort.

How does Entocort® work?
Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are serious chronic inflammatory diseases of the intestines, which may cause the lining to become thickened and ulcerated (wounds that may form cavities or holes). The ulcerated areas may also form abscesses (areas of pus) in severe cases. Entocort works by reducing the underlying inflammation and gives symptom relief and allows healing of the affected/inflamed area.

How is Entocort® given?
Entocort is supplied as capsules for oral treatment of Crohn's disease. These are in the form that allows a controlled (slow) release of the medicine in the bowel where it is needed. Entocort is also available as an enema, which is applied via the rectum (last part of the digestive tract that leaves the body at the anus) for the treatment of ulcerative colitis.
