Migraine facts and figures

  • Migraine is a disabling condition that occurs in episodes or ‘attacks’. Attacks can last from a few hours to up to 2–3 days. In between each attack there are no symptoms.

  • Migraine consists of a throbbing headache on one side of the head that is usually made worse by movement. During a migraine attack, the sufferer may feel or be sick, and become extremely sensitive to noise, light and smells

  • Just over one in ten adults worldwide suffer from migraine, with attacks typically occurring in people aged 25–55 years.

  • Most individuals experience their first migraine attack during childhood or as a teenager, with the first episode tending to occur at an earlier age in boys than in girls. After puberty, the prevalence increases much more rapidly in females.

  • Migraine is about three times more common in women than in men, which may be due to a hormonal influence on the condition.

  • People of white ethnic background are more likely to suffer from migraine than black or Asian individuals.
