What are the symptoms?
High blood pressure usually causes no symptoms. It is estimated that three out of every 10 people with high blood pressure don’t even know that they have it. It is possible to have high blood pressure for many years without realizing. That is why it is important to check the blood pressure regularly.
The longer high blood pressure goes untreated, however, the more damage it does to the body. That’s why high blood pressure is often called the “silent killer”.
Occasionally high blood pressure does cause symptoms. This is more likely if the blood pressure is extremely high. Symptoms may include:
- Headache
- Tiredness
- Confusion
- Changes in vision (eg, blurred vision)
- Dizziness
- Uneven heartbeat
