What is Theo-Dur® ?

Theo-Dur contains the medicine theophylline and belongs to the group of medicines called xanthines, which act as bronchodilators.

What is Theo-Dur® used for?

Theo-Dur is used to treat and/or prevent the symptoms of bronchial asthma and chronic bronchitis and emphysema (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).

How does Theo-Dur® work ?

Theo-Dur is a type of medicine called a bronchodilator:

  • It works by relaxing the muscles of the air passages causing them to widen.

  • It does this by blocking special chemical reactions inside the muscle cells that control the degree of narrowing of the airways.

  • It opens up the air passages of the lungs (bronchial tubes) and increases the flow of air through them.

Theophylline relieves cough, wheezing, shortness of breath and troubled breathing.

How is Theo-Dur® given ?

Theo-Dur is supplied as tablets that provide extended release, so it is designed to be taken every 12 hours.
