Plendil® (felodipine)

Alternative brand (trade) names: Flodil, Modip and Splendil.

What is Plendil® ?

Plendil contains the medicine felodipine, which belongs to the group of medicines called calcium-channel blockers.

What is Plendil® used for?

Plendil is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and to prevent angina (chest pain caused by too little oxygen reaching the heart muscle).

How does Plendil® work ?

Plendil is a type of medicine called a calcium-channel blocker. This means:

  • Plendil prevents calcium from entering and being released within the muscle cells lining the small arteries of the heart and other blood vessels of the body.

  • Calcium is necessary for muscle cells to contract, blocking calcium transport causes the muscles to relax and the arteries to expand and widen (dilate).

  • This is how Plendil reduces blood pressure, by dilating blood vessels.
  • By reducing blood pressure, this also reduces the heart’s work (burden), which lessens the heart muscle’s need (demand) for oxygen and helps to prevent angina in patients with coronary artery disease. Plendil has little or no effect on the muscles or veins of the heart.

  • By relaxing the blood vessels of the heart, Plendil is useful in treating and preventing chest pain (angina) resulting from coronary artery narrowing due to spasm.

How is Plendil® given ?

Plendil is supplied as tablets.

It is very important to take this medicine as often as your doctor has told you to, even if you do not feel ill. This is because heart and blood pressure problems, if not treated, can get progressively worse.

It is also important to follow any lifestyle instructions that your doctor has given to you, like trying to give up smoking, reducing your weight, doing more exercise and eating a healthy diet.
