Pulmicort® (budesonide)
Alternative brand (trade) names: Spirocort.
What is Pulmicort® ?
Pulmicort contains the active ingredient budesonide, which is used to reduce inflammation.
What is Pulmicort® used for?
Pulmicort is used to treat asthma, by reducing inflammation in the airways of the lungs.
How does Pulmicort® work ?
Budesonide is a type of medicine called a steroid (of the glucocorticosteroid type), which reduces inflammation in the airways that is partly responsible for the symptoms of asthma.
- It is important to take budesonide every day because it treats the long-lasting (chronic), underlying part of asthma. For this reason, it is called a preventer medication.
- The inflammation is the "quiet part" of asthma that you cannot hear, see, or feel. When it is left untreated, inflammation can worsen. The lungs can become more inflamed and asthma symptoms and attacks can increase.
- Glucocorticosteroids are not the same as anabolic steroids (the type of steroids that some athletes have been known to take to improve their athletic performance).
How is Pulmicort® given ?
Pulmicort is supplied in a number of forms, including an inhaler, a Turbuhaler and as a solution for use in nebulisers. Nebulisers are devices that change liquid medicines into a fine mist for breathing in.
