Distraneurin® (clomethiazole)

What is Distraneurin® ?

This medicine contains chlormethiazole which has both sedative (tranquilliser) and anticonvulsant (anti-epileptic) properties.

What is Distraneurin® used for?

  • Distraneurin is used to treat restlessness and agitated behaviour in elderly people.

  • It is also used for the short term treatment of severe insomnia (not being able to sleep) in elderly people.

  • Distraneurin may also be used to treat the effects of acute alcohol withdrawal in people who are addicted to alcohol.

  • The anticonvulsant properties make it useful in treating epileptic patients in “status epilepticus” (having one fit immediately after another, see epilepsy).

  • Additionally the anticonvulsant properties are used in eclampsia (one or more convulsions, or seizures, occurring during or immediately after pregnancy see pre eclampsia/eclampsia.)

How does Distraneurin® work ?

  • The sedative/tranquilliser properties of Distraneurin help to control the restlessness and agitated behaviour in elderly patients.

  • These properties are also beneficial for insomnia in the elderly.

  • Additionally the anticonvulsant properties of Distraneurin produce benefit in both “status epilepticus” and eclampsia.

How is Distraneurin® given ?

It is supplied as tablets, syrup or can also be given as a solution for infusion, by a health professional, into a vein.
