What is Elavil® ?

  • This medicine contains amitriptyline hydrochloride, an antidepressant

What is Elavil® used for?

  • Elavil is for patients with depression

  • Depression is an illness characterised by a low mood and a reduced ability to enjoy life

How does Elavil® work ?

  • Amitriptyline is an antidepressant that belongs to a group of medicines called the tricyclic antidepressants

  • In some patients with depression, low levels of brain chemicals, called neurotransmitters, may play a part in their depression

  • Amitriptyline is thought to improve mood by raising the level of neurotransmitters in brain tissue

  • It might take quite a while for anti-depressants to have a noticeable effect on depression.

  • The doctor will advise how long treatment should be taken for. Quite often anti-depressants are continued for a while after symptoms have gone away.

How is Elavil® given ?

Elavil is supplied as tablets but it can also be given as a solution for injection, by a health professional.
