Treatment

Currently available treatments can be very effective in treating a migraine attack. It is therefore very important that you talk to your doctor about the best way for you to control your migraine attacks, and to make sure that there are no other reasons for your headaches.

The management of your migraine may mean that you have to take some medicine(s), but it may also involve some lifestyle changes. Read more infomation about living with migraine

Medicines

Broadly speaking, two main types of medicines are used to treat patients with migraine:

  • Acute treatments – medicines that are used to treat each migraine attack after it has started
  • Preventative (prophylactic) treatments – medicines that may be taken all the time to stop an attack happening in the future.

The type of medicine you use will depend on how painful and how frequent your migraine attacks are and what other symptoms you experience, e.g. feeling sick.
