Home Fibroids How serious are they?
|
|
Fibroids can in some cases, seriously impair health and quality of life. These effects result from the heavy bleeding, anaemia, discomfort, tiredness and alterations in bladder and bowel function that can occur.
It is estimated that 30 – 40% of all the hysterectomies performed are to treat serious cases of fibroids.
In addition fibroids can reduce the ability to become pregnant.
In most women who have fibroids and become pregnant, there are no problems. However, there is a very small risk of miscarriage, premature labour and bleeding.
There is also a very small risk, that in some women (0.1%) the fibroid can become cancerous. Since fibroids are not associated with a visible handicap it can be very difficult for others to understand how they can severely affect normal day-to-day activities. |
