Lung cancer surgery

The following types of surgery may be offered in the treatment of your lung cancer:

  • Wedge resection: surgery to remove only a small part of the lung
  • Lobectomy: surgery to remove the whole lobe of the lung
  • Pneumonectomy: surgery to remove a whole lung

The type of operation that your doctor will recommend will depend upon the size and position of your tumour and may involve removing only a small part of your lung or the removal of the whole lung.

It may take weeks or even months for you to recover fully from lung surgery, although some people recover more quickly than others. It is normal to have some pain or discomfort after your operation but this can be controlled using painkillers.
