What is lung cancer?

Lung cancer is an uncontrolled (malignant) growth of cells in one or both lungs.

Lung diagram

Lung cancer usually forms from cells that line the airways or from nearby glands, within the lungs. These are the cells that come into contact with the air that we breathe, which may contain chemicals that can cause cancer (carcinogens).

In lung cancer these changes of normal cells into cancerous cells usually happen over a period of years.
