Symptoms - If you suffer from reflux esophagitis, it is likely that you will experience heartburn. Heartburn is a burning feeling rising from the stomach or lower chest up towards the neck.
- You may also experience a burning sensation in the lower chest immediately after swallowing hot fluids (eg tea and coffee), alcohol, concentrated fruit juices or hot fatty food.
- Reflux eesophagitis is associated with damage (erosions - a shallow open sore limited to the inner lining of esophagus or rarely deeper lesion called ulcer ) to the lining of the esophagus. Repeated damage and scarring of the esophagus can lead to narrowing of the esophagus, and this may result in difficulty in swallowing (also known as dysphagia).
- Swallowed food may come back into the mouth, and you may even vomit.
- You may also suffer from a cough, particularly at night.
- You may experience hoarseness, a sore throat and throat clearing.
- You may develop asthma or wheezing.
- Some patients suffer from dental diseases due to reflux.
It is important that you speak to your doctor if you suffer from heartburn for more than 2 days a week or if you experience any of the symptoms of reflux esophagitis. Although these effects may seem mild to you, they may be having a damaging effect on your health
