What is the difference between GERD, acid reflux, esophagitis and heartburn?
GERD stands for gastrooesophageal reflux disease and is a medical condition where acid from the stomach leaks up into the oesophagus. The presence of stomach acid in the oesophagus is known as acid reflux. Acid reflux can cause a burning feeling rising from the stomach or lower chest up towards the neck.. This is known as heartburn. The oesophageal wall may be damaged by prolonged exposure to stomach acid. This is known as oesophagitis.

Does exercise increase incidence of heartburn?
You may find that you suffer heartburn when you bend or exercise. This does not mean that you should not exercise, but it may be best to wait two or three hours after a meal before you exercise. If the burning sensation gets much worse when you exercise, you should talk to your doctor.

Taking medicines during pregnancy
About a quarter of pregnant women experience daily heartburn and about a half have occasional symptoms. Most people will get relief using simple antacid mixtures or tablets such as magnesium trisilicate. These can be bought over-the-counter . These products are not absorbed into the bloodstream and so, therefore, should not affect the baby. If the symptoms are not controlled by antacids, your doctor will be able to recommend other treatment options.
