Heartburn facts and figures

Heartburn (also known as acid indigestion) is a burning feeling rising from the stomach or lower chest up towards the neck.

  • In Western countries about 40% (2 in every 5) of adults suffer from heartburn.

  • Up to 44% of American adults suffer from heartburn at least once a month and approximately 7% of Americans experience heartburn at least once a day.

  • 25% (1 in 4) of pregnant women experience daily heartburn and more than 50% (half) have occasional symptoms.
