Associated issues

Work
Most people can return to normal work within 6 to 8 weeks of having a heart attack. However, this will depend on the type and severity of your heart attack, how quickly you have recovered and the nature of your job. Some people who have a very physical job may be advised to find lighter work. Your doctor or nurse will advise you when they feel it will be appropriate for you to return to work.

Sex
Most people who have had an heart attack continue to enjoy an active sex life. You should follow the same simple rules as for any exercise: if you are becoming severely breathless or are developing a bad chest pain, slow down or rest for a few minutes.

Driving
Most people who have had an heart attack can continue to drive, without restrictions, once they have fully recovered from their heart attack. You may need to inform your licensing authority and insurance company. If you drive a heavy goods vehicle or a bus, you may need to give up these licences. Your doctor will be able to give you advice about this.

Travel and holidays
Holidays are important and recommended for everyone. Air travel should not be a problem but if you suffer from breathlessness, you should consult your doctor. You should avoid holidays at high altitudes, especially if you have angina that is brought on easily, or if you suffer from breathlessness.

Here are a few simple tips for problem-free travel:

  • Plan your journey carefully and allow plenty of time
  • Avoid rushing or carrying heavy luggage
  • Take plenty of rests
